Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen Recap

By: Evelyn

On Tuesday the Alexander McQueen Spring 2011 collection debuted at Paris Fashion Week. This was the first collection after the passing of McQueen and is the first collection designed for the brand by Sarah Burton. The collection was a huge success and Burton is receiving much acclaim for her work.

The collection had all the quirks we love of McQueen. It looked and felt like McQueen. Notably there was an underlying harvest and rebirth theme. With this collection Burton has officially established herself as the worthy successor of McQueen.

What do you think of the collection?

Emmy Recap

By: Evelyn

Who was best dressed at the 62nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards? Here are some of my Hits and Misses.

Hits

True Blood's Anna Paquin in Alexander McQueen (AP Photo/Matt Sayles)

“True Blood’s” Anna Paquin wore this stand out Alexander McQueen dress from the spring collection. She has received a lot of criticism for this dress, but I believe she really pulled it off. It was very flattering on her and really fit for the occasion considering the tough and strong character she plays on “True Blood,” Sookie Stackhouse.

“Glee’s” Lea Michele looked radiant in the color of the evening, navy. This Oscar de la Renta gown hit her in all the right places and was the perfect combination of fun and sophisticated for the 24 year old. Her Lorraine Schwartz statement necklace was the icing on the cake, and even her dark nail polish really pulled the look together.

My top pick of the night was the Best Actress in a Miniseries or Movie winner, Claire Danes, from “Temple Grandin” in this stunning Swarovski crystal-encrusted Armani Prive gown. It was simple, yet elegant. Perfect for the Best Actress winner.

Misses

“Parenthood” star Lauren Graham failed to impress in this Yigal Azrouël dress. The cut, the fit, it was all wrong.

Christina Hendricks from “Mad Men” was a feathery disaster in this Zac Posen dress.

Kate Gosselin looked matronly in her Carmen Marc Valvo dress. It was a bit top heavy.

Men’s Pick

Ryan Kwanten from “True Blood” is my male pick of the evening. He stood out in his plaid double-buttoned suit and stand out patterned red tie. It was refreshing to see this young star in something other than the basic black tux.

New York Fashion Week Recap

By: Evelyn

There will be plenty of metallic fabrics, full skirts, and asymmetrical cuts coming this fall. These were the predominant trends at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York this week.

Diane von Furstenberg featured a collection described as “menswear meets femininity.” “I always say I’d love to have a man’s life in a woman’s body,” von Furstenberg explained before her show.

Christian Siriano pleasantly surprised us with a collection of ready to wear separates and cocktail dresses. This was a big change for the designer who is known for his extravagant ballgowns.

Of course we have to mention Naomi Campbell’s Fashion for Relief show on Friday night. Designers featured included Dolce & Gabbana, Ralph Lauren, and Christian Dior. Celebrities to hit the runway included Kelly Osbourne, Dian Von Furstenberg, Donna Karan, and Chris Brown. The show ended with a moving tribute to Alexander McQueen with a collection of his designs worn by the show’s most well known models including Naomi Campbell.

Watch clips from the Fashion for Relief show.
